Answer: The Transforming Power Fund is working towards a vision for Detroit in which all of our communities have the resources, relationships, and skills to collectively and equitably shape the future. Broadly, the fund addresses the pressing need for community organizing to address systemic social injustices, especially efforts led by those disproportionately impacted by the issues: Black, Indigenous and people of color. Through community-led grantmaking and donor organizing, we also aim to model a more equitable approach to traditional philanthropy. TPF grew out of a grassroots effort to bring more foundation resources to social justice movements and to demonstrate a more equitable approach to traditional philanthropy. It is an attempt to put into practice the 12 Recommendations for Detroit Funders produced in 2015 by Allied Media Projects and Detroit Peoples Platform, and it is informed by the research of the 2017 report, Changing the Conversation: Philanthropic Funding and Community Organizing in Detroit. The Transforming Power Fund launched in February 2019 and serves the geographic locations of Detroit, Highland Park, and Hamtramck, Michigan.
