Answer: Victorian era England is responsible for the proliferation of ornate iron and glass enclosures called Conservatories that originated in 16th century Italy where fruit was grown in a structure called an Orangery. The Victorians built conservatories as public spaces and as attachments to homes. The idea soon spread to North America where the remnants of that period are still present in dramatic public spaces such as Garfield Park Conservatory in Chicago and the New York Botanical Gardens. The modern era of the residential conservatory began with the advent of insulated glass. The revival of Victorian conservatories concentrated on personal living spaces for single family homes rather than the public works dedicated exclusively to growing plants. Town & Country Conservatories UK traces its roots to the early 1980's becoming one of the earliest design/builders of high quality custom designed residential conservatories in England. In 1994 Town & Country expanded to North America at the invitation of James Licata, an attorney and experienced renovator in Chicago, Illinois. Under Mr. Licatas leadership the North American operation has expanded to include Skylights, Pool and Garden Houses and Conservatories for Public Spaces. Town & Country U.S. has built in all the major regions of North America and this year will complete a project in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Town & Country offers an infinite variety of shapes and sizes of structures made of hardwood and aluminum.
