Answer: Tafesilafai is a civil rights, social justice, faith-and community-based organization that functions as an organic clearinghouse for things Samoan and Pacific Islander. Its mission is to ensure the political, educational, social and economic equality of rights of Samoans and Pacific Islanders are guaranteed. It is a think tank where issues about the Samoan people, language and culture are investigated, researched, presented, debated, and where solutions are suggested and implemented. In response to the need for Samoan and Pacific Islander youth to have a safe place to celebrate their culture, language, dance and customs, Tafesilafa'i cultural festival was formed in 1997. Seventeen years later, in addition to sponsoring its annual cultural festival, Tafesilafa'i is now a major partner in the local, regional, state, national and world conversations about Samoans and Pacific Islanders. Tafesilafai is a three-time award winning California Domestic Non-Profit Corporation and Federal 501(c)(3) Corporation, which is an attempt by the collective Samoan Polynesian community to inform traditions, cultural ceremonies and dances under the rubric Christian Stewardship. In Samoan, Tafesilafai means meeting face to face. It provides opportunity to all Pacific Islanders and community members to come together, meet face to face and to exchange stories, ideas, and resources, break bread and enjoy the fellowship of one another.
