Answer: Project Peanut Butter (PPB) seeks to advance the treatment of severe acute malnutrition, the single largest cause of child death in the world today, using effective, locally produced ready-to-use therapeutic foods (RUTFs). This nonprofit is formed to provide needed nutritional and medical support primarily to children suffering from severe acute malnutrition in sub-Saharan Africa and beyond. We make our impact by producing RUTF in factories located in Malawi, Sierra Leone, and Ghana. We sell the majority of our product at cost to UN agencies, and our product adheres to strict microbiological, nutritional, and organoleptic standards. Our teams of local nurses also assess children for acute malnutrition and distribute the food at mobile clinics to sick children free of charge. One of the most unique aspects of our work is that we produce RUTF locally, in the countries where the product is needed, and we use as many local ingredients as possible. Our projects support local economies and build stronger communities by providing jobs for farmers, factory workers, administrators, nurses, health aides, drivers, and others. RUTF was endorsed in 2007 by the United Nations, World Health Organization, and World Food Programme as the standard of care for severely malnourished children worldwide.
