These natural treasures, originated by glaciers, are named for the unique geological formation of a broad flat valley surrounded by mountains at the head of a deep glacial lake. A short distance from any developed area is Glacier National Park, designated hiking areas, 2 ski resorts, 8 golf courses, Flathead Lake, and Hungry Horse Reservoir. With the abundance of recreational opportunities and aesthetic values, it is not hard to see why Flathead County is the among the fastest growing, and the 3rd most populated county in Montana. Flathead County is a commission style of government. The Departments and Divisions that make up County government strive to make Flathead County a safe, healthy, and fulfilling place to live, work and play, by providing vital services to the community. The County Commission, consisting of three elected commissioners, is the Executive as well as the Legislative branch for Flathead County.
