Answer: The Brazos County Emergency Communications District was created in 1988 to provide Enhanced 9-1-1 (E911) emergency communications to the citizens of Brazos County. During the planning stage of the neutral Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP), discussions were held concerning a combined dispatch center. Even before the District was created, local leaders had entertained the idea of a combined dispatch center. Various proposals for this combined operation were presented to City and County staffs. Bryan and Brazos County elected to participate in one of the first combined dispatch centers in Texas. Today, the Brazos County 9-1-1 District operates a 24/7 multi-jurisdictional communications center and currently provides service for 13 local law enforcement and fire agencies in Brazos County. Additionally, our agency owns and operates the 9-1-1 network and infrastructure in Brazos County which supports over 100,000 9-1-1 calls at five answering points on an annual basis. Our operations are housed in a hardened facility encompassing over 8,000 sq. /ft. including a dispatch center, training facilities, meeting space, and administrative offices. Each of our 40+ dispatchers completes an initial training period of at least 5 months prior to working on their own and are licensed as Telcommunicators by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). They are cross-trained and able to provide dispatching support to any of the agencies we serve utilizing a very complex and capable array of equipment and technology.
