Answer: Our Mission is to provide active leadership and cooperative partnerships in delivering public safety and law enforcement services in the City of Wayland, with an emphasis on community involvement, timely and thorough criminal investigations and directed proactive traffic safety enforcement. The Wayland City Police Department acknowledges our primary duty is to provide fair, professional, and impartial police service to all those who live, work, and visit the City of Wayland. Therefore, we value high level community partnerships and cooperation to insure the effective delivery of community oriented policing services. We further recognize that in order to provide such policing services, it is necessary for members to maintain exceptional self-discipline relating to matters of duty, integrity, courtesy, and service. Because of this, Department members will conform to the following principals: Members shall enforce laws equally and impartially without regard to race, creed, sex, religion, national origin, social or economic status. Members shall act, speak, and conduct themselves in such a manner as to treat all people with the courtesy and respect due every human being. They will not display bias or prejudice against any race, religion, group, or individual. We recognize the function of law enforcement is to apprehend those who have committed a crime and not to punish them. Members will use only the amount of force necessary to overcome resistance to arrest or control. We are philosophically and legally committed to fulfilling the mandates of the non-discrimination provisions of all state and federal rules and regulations. Persons will not be excluded because of race, religion, gender, or national origin, from consideration for examination, employment, appointment, promotion, or retention. Members shall adhere to these principals in order to assure the continued provision of fair and meaningful service to all those who live, work, and visit Wayland.
