Answer: Unite the People is a nonprofit organization formed in 2014 by a small group of concerned citizens, defense lawyers and legal experts, and social advocates to deal with the problem of mass incarceration and the need for prison and sentencing reform in the United States. Many of our staff also have incarcerated loved ones and direct experience dealing with the failings of the criminal "justice" system. In 2017, we began the process of running a statewide ballot initiative in California, "The People's Fair Sentencing and Public Safety Act," to fix the state's draconian three strikes law and allow nonviolent offenders to seek early release and resentencing.
