Answer: Welcome to the Town of Yemassee, located on the banks of the Pocotaligo River in Beaufort & Hampton counties in South Carolina and often referred to as the geographical center of the Lowcountry. The population was 1,080 at the 2020 census. Yemassee is also very near the borders of Colleton and Jasper counties and is often considered to be the geographical center or heart of the Lowcountry region. The town is divided by the county line between Beaufort and Hampton counties, which follows the roadbed of the CSX railroad. Most of the towns population presently lies within Hampton County (as of 2023). As defined by the U.S. Census Bureau, the Beaufort County portion of Yemassee is included within the Hilton Head Island-Bluffton-Beaufort Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Town plays host to three historical plantations including Bindon, Cotton Hall & Tomotley which are protected by conservation easements to preserve our pristine landscape for generations to come.
