Answer: The Urban Canopy is a socially and ecologically responsible urban farming operation in Chicago helping to create a sustainable and equitable food system. Our operations are divided into 3 branches: Growers (Production), Eaters (Distribution), and Composters (Food Waste Procurement). These are named after what we consider to be the 3 essential components of a sustainble food cycle. Highlights: We produce indoor farm product year-round, and seasonal outdoor produce. Our CSA, or LUCSA " Local Unified Community Supported Agriculture " provides goods from our farms and products from partner local producers. We attend farmers markets all around the city. Weve also partnered with the City of Chicago to manage and supply farmers markets in underserved communities on the citys south and west sides. We supply both small and large-scale grocers, restaurants, and juice bars with fresh produce, microgreens, and wheatgrass to increase the availability of sustainably grown food in Chicago neighborhoods. Our Compost Club program helps divert food scraps from landfills and distributes them to our partner farms where composting takes place. Its important that those vital nutrients from food scraps stay in our soil to help eliminate the need for petroleum based fertilizers and grow food more sustainably. We partner with community development organizations to develop community gardens that create local jobs, improve the local environment, educate community members about healthy living and farming, and provide locally sustainable food to these and other surrounding communities.
