We use all natural simple ingredients to create an award winning line of small batch condiments, pickles, salsas, jams and applesauce. Started in 2014, The Backyard Food Company has grown to 18 products carried in over 300 stores from Maine to New Jersey. In January 2012, co-founder Matt McClelland had a cancerous tumor removed. During his eight week recovery he began planning a garden to take control of the food he was putting in his body. With the help of best friend and cofounder Louby Sukkar, the victory garden took shape and expanded to Louby's backyard as well. With over 200 tomato plants and 100 cucumber plants, he began finding old family recipes to preserve the harvest and sharing his creations with Louby. The two started testing the recipes out on friends and family. They were a hit! In June of 2014 they decided to make a business out of it and The Backyard Food Company was born. They found Hope & Main, a newly established culinary incubator in Warren Rhode Island and launched a Kickstarter campaign to produce Sweet Tomato Jam, Candied Jalapenos, Jalapeno Relish and Apple Butter. They created sweet and hot red pepper relishes in October 2014 after a chance meeting with a local Whole Food Forager and were on the shelves with five products by December. 2015 - expanded into 40 stores across RI and MA - Best of Rhode Island editor's award for Best Gourmet Condiments. 2016 - added heirloom pickles and cranberry apple jam - partnered with Chex Finer Foods and picked up 200 stores - Best of Rhode Island Reader's Choice Best Locally Made Food Products 2017 - added salsa - Best of Rhode Island Reader's Choice Best Locally Made Food Products - RIFDA Spirit of Rhode Island Award 2018 - added applesauce - Best of Rhode Island Reader's Choice Best Locally Made Food Products - RIFDA Spirit of Rhode Island Award
