Answer: Taam Teva is a nature enrichment program for 3-6 year olds that promotes nature-based learning through a Jewish lens. The founder of Taam Teva, Margie Pines, first got the idea for this program after seeing a decline in children spending time outdoors. After observing this trend, Margie dove into research around early childhood education and soon discovered the immense cognitive, physical, and emotional benefits associated with children being connected to their natural environment. From this, Taam Teva was started! At Taam Teva, curriculum is focused around outdoor activities that immerse kids in their local environment and spark their imagination. We are outside as much as possible and in doing so, engage in place-based learning meaning that we use what is happening in nature as a guide. Much of our learning is also child-led, meaning that we allow the children and their interests influence activities. In addition to our program being nature-based, our curriculum is centered around Jewish culture and values. We frequently focus activities around upcoming Jewish holidays and promote Jewish ideals on a daily basis. For example, we incorporate a Hoda'ah (gratefulness) Circle at the end of each class. As a result of participation in Taam Teva, we aim for students to gain social-emotional and executive functioning skills, positive mental health practices, and a life-long appreciation for nature.
