Answer: Summary: The Allderdice Steel Dragons was founded in 1998 as the first robotics team at Pittsburgh Allderdice High School, offering access to the STEM fields to all students, regardless of background or economic status. Since the 2016 season, the team has increased in size five-fold, allowing us to expand our impact on the student body, and increase community outreach at local elementary schools. During the 2018-19 season, the team advanced to the playoffs in the regional competition and finished only one match away from advancing to the world championships. The team also significantly impacts students’ decisions about college: this year, all graduating team members chose their majors in an engineering or math subject. Current Activities: Each year, the team designs, constructs, and programs a full-sized robot from scratch and enters it into the FIRST Robotics Competition, the largest high school robotics competition in the world. During the winter season, the team meets every day after school in a lab, where we split up into sub-teams and work to design, build, and program the robot. Diversity: Allderdice's enrollment is 1,500 students, of which over 50% are minorities and 41% are eligible for the free or reduced-price lunch programs, an indicator of economic disadvantage. The team’s goal is providing access to a hands-on, mentor-based learning environment to all these students.
