Answer: Seagull Salon is a four-chair boutique hair salon in the West Village offering cut, color, highlights, and hair styling services in a friendly luxury setting. The salon is open evenings, Sundays and Mondays to accommodate New York's best and busiest. Originally opened in 1971, in the heyday of gay liberation, not a stone's throw from the Christopher Street piers and the historic West Village Stonewall bar, Seagull Salon was named for Jonathan Livingston Seagull, Richard Bach's best-seller of the time. It was the first unisex barber shop in New York City (if not the country) and the original gold script "for women. . . for men" still emblazons the salons window. Over the years Seagull has changed hands several times, evolving from an idiosyncratic barber shop to a creative hair salon offering color services as well as hair cuts. The current owners are lead stylist Shaun Cottle and musician and writer Johanna Fateman (Le Tigre, MEN, Artforum, Bookforum). They took over the shop in 2006 and have redone the space with custom furniture by David McLean, a painting by Nolan Hendrickson, vintage stylist chairs and their own strange collections of art and loved objects. Under Johanna and Shaun's direction, the salon caters to their New York community's discerning cultural tastes including, but not limited to hair. Seagull clients are artists, writers, fashion editors, musicians, actors, and everything else . . . visit the Seagull blog for news about the salons happenings and our extended circle of friends.
