This project involves the development of two offshore fields: Piltun-Astokhskoye (mostly oil) and Lunskoye (mostly gas) fields of the north-eastern coast of Sakhalin. Sakhalin Energy, an operator of the Sakhalin-2 project, was founded in 1994. Currently, the shareholders of Sakhalin Energy are Gazprom (50% plus 1 share), Shell (27.5%), Mitsui (12.5%) and Mitsubishi (10%). The Sakhalin-2 is the first Russian project in offshore oil and gas production. Under this project, before 2009, the company had built an extensive production infrastructure.
