Answer: Oxnard Buddhist Temple belongs to the Jodo Shinshu school of Buddhism. With roots in the Pure Land Buddhist tradition, we share a common spiritual heritage with many Buddhist communities active today in Japan, China, Korea, Vietnam, as well as here in the United States. We look to the eminent 12th century Japanese Buddhist priest Shinran as the founder of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism. Shinran lived at time when Japan was experiencing great social upheaval, with Japanese Buddhism undergoing a transformation from secluded monastic communities that served the privileged elite to a flourishing of socially engaged Buddhist teachings that offered paths to awakening for the common people. Shinran taught that by listening to the words of the Buddha with an open heart, the path of our lives is illuminated by the wisdom and compassion of awakening. We welcome all to join us for opportunities to learn about Buddhism through services, study classes, and family activities.
