Answer: Orbital Traction is developing and commercializing a patented, industry proven adjustable speed drive (ASD) technology for a broad range of applications in the mechanical power transmission and motion control markets. Orbital Tractions ASD will enable significant gains in energy efficiency over regular planetary gear transmissions. The Orbital ASD is unique because unlike other ASDs, it does not require an external pressure mechanism (i.e. clamping of the belt or traction elements) to enable the ASD to function. This advantage significantly simplifies the system and its power requirements, leading to additional efficiencies, flexibility in packing and high torque density. The Orbital ASD is based on commonly used roller bearing technology which will minimize its production costs and provide relatively inexpensive servicing requirements.
