Answer: Nordson Green Earth Foundation strives to improve tree equity by establishing tiny native forests in the Chicagoland area--because all communities deserve trees and the health, climate and social benefits they provide. Trees are infrastructure in a community. Healthy trees mitigate climate change by reducing temperature and reducing the heat island effect, control flooding, reduce air pollution, and sequester carbon. These effects then improve physical, mental and social health of communities. Nordson Green Earth Foundation plants tiny, urban forests using the Miyawaki Method developed by the late Japanese botanist, Akira Miyawaki. Extensive soil preparation is done to create soils representative of native forests. Species selection is guided by the use of native perennials, shrubs, sub-canopy and canopy layer trees. In 2-3 years, forests are maintenance free.
