Answer: MySafe:LA delivers fire and life safety education, to children, families, and the general public. The organization also develops in-service education programs for first responders. During 2010, MySafe:LA presented educational programming to more than 240 schools, plus rec and parks facilities, senior centers, and museums. 38,400 children participated in our program. The Los Angeles Fire Department supported the program, providing apparatus and firefighters to help our team demonstrate key fire and life safety messages. For 2014, we are focusing on new, expanded initiatives that involve challenge-based learning. We focus on interaction to help ensure retention (and we undertake ongoing research and analysis). An example: During the past four years, MySafe:LA has participated in the Great Shakeout, implementing a real-time evacuation and rescue drill in a Los Angeles elementary school. The drill included a combination of students, teachers, and LA firefighters. As one example, one of our drills was focused on a central LA elementary school during which we simulated a major earthquake and its aftermath. After providing students with an overview of earthquake survival, at the appointed time, all classrooms dropped, covered, and held on during the simulated earthquake. Two minutes later, all classrooms were evacuated to the playground under the direction of school administrators and supported by MySafe:LA and CERT members. During the evacuation, we determined two classrooms were "trapped" and unable to evacuate. Our IC then asked for fire resources to effect a physical rescue. Multiple fire companies responded, although operating in "degraded" mode and students were "rescued." The drill included the LAFD Emergency Services Bureau, Division and Battalion Commanders, Fire Companies, CERT, the Red Cross, SCEC, CalTech, ECA, Children's Hospital, and other agencies.
