Answer: Mi Casa is a nonprofit housing developer founded in 1992 to produce and preserve affordable housing for low and moderate-income (LMI) households in Washington, DC in order to foster healthy, thriving, and diverse neighborhoods. Over the past two decades Mi Casa has developed some 2,000 units of affordable housing benefiting more than 1,200 individuals. Our key programs are Tenant Purchase (TOPA) and Single-Family Homeownership Programs and Affordable Rental Program. We create owned affordable housing by helping tenants convert multifamily rental buildings into limited equity cooperatives and through infill construction of new and rehabilitation of abandoned single-family homes. We create rental affordable housing by leasing units in Mi Casa-owned properties that we have built or renovated. We practice community-driven development, working closely with residents to ensure projects address local priorities. Our projects generate investment in surrounding economies, providing job and service opportunities to local businesses and residents. Environmental responsibility is also integral to our mission. We use green construction techniques and materials to create energy efficient, healthy environments that adhere to national standards.
