Answer: Measurement Technology Laboratories (MTL) was founded in 1996 to develop state of the art metrology systems for the measurement of mass, density (solid and liquid), and temperature, primarily using LabVIEWTM software. MTL succeeded at national and private laboratories across the world and then grew by incorporating automation into measurement processes. By the year 2000 the demands of the 1996 Clean Air Act were causing serious measurement challenges for environmental agencies who sought to quantify airborne particulate matter (PM2.5) on TeflonTM filters. MTL was uniquely positioned to measure these very small quantities and therefore provided the industry with a highly accurate, highly automated system for weighing these filters. Through extensive research into the uncertainties in measuring PM2.5 filters, it became apparent that the filters themselves were unstable. MTL developed and patented a new filter that solidified its reputation as an industry change-maker that provides solutions to pressing measurement needs. This patented filter is used by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which has awarded MTL 5-year contracts to supply its filters in 2010 and 2016. Particulate filters used in ambient air quality monitoring are also used by engine manufacturers to quantify particulate in engine exhaust. MTL used its position as a global leader in filter weighing to enter the engine emissions market with similar solutions. Today customers include Ford, General Motors, Chrysler, Honda, Toyota, Volvo, Mercedes, John Deere, Caterpillar, Cummins, and many others, including premier government emissions laboratories. Regulatory customers include the U.S. EPAs National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory in Ann Arbor, MI; the California Air Research Board; Hong Kong Environmental Protection Department; Environment Canada; and the United Kingdoms National Physical Laboratory. MTL now stands as the global expert in PM2.5 measurements.
