Answer: Marine Lumber was originally built around the ocean vessel shipping industry that was predominant in Portland during the 1940s and 1950s. Our company focused on supplying lining lumber to the steamship industry, which was used for separation and bracing of various cargo in preparation for overseas shipments. The first generation owner, Edward S. McGrath, had grown up in the steamship business and branched out into the lumber business later in life, creating Marine Lumber Co. in 1946. Lining lumber was the core product the company manufactured and supplied customers until the 1960s, when containerized freight eventually made this product obsolete. Stan McGrath, Edwards son, took over in the 60s and began to focus on lumber and plywood mainly for industrial packaging and crating and has ever since. Marine Lumber is currently being run by Edward S. McGrath II, Stans son, and the third generation to operate the company, and continues to operate with the winning philosophy of providing consistent on time service, and competitive pricing, along with dependable service.
