Answer: Little Brothers - Friends of the Elderly (LBFE) is a national network of non-profit, volunteer-based organizations committed to relieving loneliness and isolation among older adults. We offer to people of good will the opportunity to join the elderly in friendship and celebration of life. Our motto "Flowers before bread" expresses our belief that love and dignity and beauty in life are as essential as physical needs. LBFE has independent chapters in five US locations: Chicago, Boston, Cincinnati, San Francisco, Upper Michigan and one Expansion Site in New York City. The LBFE New York Expansion Site started in November 2016. During our first holiday event, a team of caring volunteers delivered 20 Thanksgiving care packages (meal, flowers and handwritten cards) to 20 homebound elderly New Yorkers in Brooklyn. Since 2017, LBFE offers friendly visiting programs to elderly New Yorkers in need of ongoing social support. All programs are offered free of charge, and for the reminder of our elderly recipients lifetime. Thanks to the support and generosity of hundreds of volunteers, donors, and community partners, LBFE in New York has made over 5,000 in-person visits (home visits, birthday visits, friendly visits with flowers, hospital visits) and 10,000 phone calls to homebound individuals from the age of 61 to 111. Recently, the US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy talked about the public health crisis caused by our nation's loneliness epidemic, and how social connections are as essential to our mental and physical health as food, water and sleep. A lasting solution to address this issue of social isolation is to invest in programs fostering inter-generational friendships. Such programs benefit all participants by: 1) Showing elderly recipients they are remembered, seen, heard, and loved 2) Giving volunteers opportunities to listen and learn from older adults visited 3) Creating a space for priceless friendships to grow 4) Reminding us to care for one another
