Answer: The Literacy Center of West Michigan is committed to bringing about a just and vibrant West Michigan through the power of literacy. With this mission statement, we are shining a light on the crucial role literacy levels play in shaping our community's future. The Literacy Center works with adults, both native speakers of English and English language learners, who read below a 9th grade level and want to improve their literacy. We are at the forefront of adult literacy instruction. Our programs meet learners where they are, offering one-on-one tutoring, workplace-focused classes, and family literacy opportunities at no cost to the learners. The Literacy Center instructs 800+ adults each year, utilizing 300 volunteers, and yet the need greatly exceeds our capacity. With 55,000 adults in Kent County held back by low literacy skills, the Literacy Center is eager to expand its capacity and draw attention to the crucial issue of low literacy among adults in our community.
