Answer: Lassen College is located in Susanville (Pop 16,000) in the far north of California, and serves students from Lassen and Modoc counties, and from countries around the world. LCC participates in the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) program. The scenic, rural campus features views of Diamond Peak and the Sierra Nevada. LCC enjoys four distinct seasons, with warm, dry summers and cold, snowy winters. Classrooms, dorms, and offices are housed in mid-century modern octagonal buildings built of locally quarried volcanic rock, with striking green metal roofs. Reno, NV, the closest major city, is 85 miles away. Lassen Community College offers 2-year degrees and certificates, including LVN and RN training, automotive diagnostics and repair, welding, gunsmithing, bovine reproduction/artificial insemination, agri-business, and computer information systems. The college educates a large number of incarcerated students around California through correspondence ed. The gunsmithing program was established in 1945 and is the oldest gunsmithing school in the United States. The program offers AS degrees in firearms repair and general gunsmithing, as well as certificates for pistolsmith, riflesmith, long guns, gunsmith machinist and metal finishing. LCC offers short-term NRA courses during the summer, covering a variety of specialized gunsmithing skills including the maintenance and repair of cowboy action pistols and long guns. LCCs fire science program runs academies for Cal Fire and supports federal, state, and local firefighting agencies with its graduates. The college competes in the CCCAA division for all athletics except for rodeo (NIRA). Programs include baseball, basketball, wrestling, soccer, rodeo, volleyball, and beach volleyball. Cougars athletics programs participate in the Golden Valley Conference and compete against other community colleges, such as Butte College, Feather River College, Lake Tahoe Community College, and College of the Redwoods.
