Answer: Kids at the Crossroads Peru is a small non-profit organization administered by an all volunteer US board of directors. KATC Peru relies on private donations to provide life-changing services to at-risk children in both urban and rural areas of Ayacucho, Peru. We currently run three major programs: an after-school program in the city, a rural schools program, and our Christmas Cheer program. Kids at the Crossroads mission is to help break the cycle of poverty in low-income communities by preparing and empowering children and adolescents to become productive, responsible and self-sufficient adults. A good education is the greatest resource we can give children to move beyond the bounds of poverty. Our After-School program in Ayacucho city serves 120-150 children. We offer reinforcement classes in communication and mathematics along with a homework study hall with tutors, supervised internet access, recreational activities, special events, food support, and workshops with psychologists, social workers and healthcare professionals. We want kids to academically, socially, and personally prepared and to have opportunities and options to make good decisions when they reach important crossroads in their life. Our Rural School program focuses on remote rural areas where children face extreme conditions and huge barriers to education. We work collaboratively with teachers and parents to reduce or eliminate those barriers by providing essential school supplies, books, teaching materials, food support and clothing among other basic necessities. The Christmas Cheer program sets our long-term mission aside for a few days to simply let kids enjoy the anticipation and excitement of getting a new toy and other treats for Christmas. Each year we deliver from 1200 to 1500 Christmas Cheer packs to children living in extreme poverty in some of the most remote corners of Ayacucho. It's a program about joy and hugs and smiles that reflects the spirit of the hoiday season.
