Answer: Kern Delta Water District was formed in December of 1965 under Division 13 of the State Water Code for the purposes of protecting the Kern River Water Rights serving certain lands within the District, and to provide a means for contracting water through the State Water Project (SWP). Although the District was formed in a relatively recent period of time, the canal systems that provide water to customers have existed since the late 1800's. Kern Delta currently serves Kern River and State water to approximately 90,000 irrigated acres through five different water rights: Kern Island, Buena Vista, Stine, Farmers, and Eastside Canals. The total length of these canals is over 126 miles, and all water is transported via gravity flow. In 2014 the State of California passed the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA). Kern Delta Water District has partnered with the City of Bakersfield and the Kern County Water Agency's "Improvement District No. 4" (ID4) in forming the Kern River Groundwater Sustainability Agency in order to provide a framework for groundwater management.
