Answer: Kaua`i Habitat for Humanity is a locally run affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, a non profit, ecumenical Christian housing organization. Kaua`i Habitat seeks to eliminate poverty housing and homelessness from Kaua`i, and to make decent shelter a matter of conscience and action. Kaua`i Habitat was founded in 1993 after hurricane `Iniki struck the island and since then has completed 103 houses around the island from Hanalei to Kekaha, providing 550 people with safe, decent, affordable shelter. Kaua`i Habitat for Humanity is a community organization, working in partnership with people of all faiths who are dedicated to Habitat's mission of helping families in need to build and renovate decent, affordable housing on the island. Volunteers provide most of the labor, and individual and corporate donors provide money and materials to build Habitat houses. Partner families themselves invest hundreds of hours of labor - 'sweat equity' - into building their homes and the homes of others. Their mortgage payments go into a revolving Fund for Humanity that is used to build more homes. The homes then are sold to those in need at no profit and with no interest charged.
