The Institute was created to provide asbestos training to accredit asbestos professionals in response to President Reagans signing of the Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act of 1986 (AHERA). Although asbestos training courses were the mainstay at that time, IEE has continuously expanded into other areas of the environmental and safety & health fields since 1989. In 1991, under new ownership, IEE separated from its parent company and became an independent Massachusetts corporation. IEE continued to diversify into other environmental safety and health fields.
