Answer: Established in 1992 to foster diversity and raise awareness by serving as a liaison between the non-Hispanic and Hispanic communities, the Hispanic League improves the quality of life for Hispanics/Latinos through promoting community inclusion, education, health and multicultural understanding with respect for diversity of all cultures. The Hispanic League serves the community through scholarships, role model programs, community service outreach and ID drives, cultural events, support of community programs, and direct involvement in both public and private sector initiatives. Signature Initiatives Education The Hispanic League facilitates education for Hispanic students through the ESL Middle School Achievers Program and the Scholarship Program. The Middle School Achievers Program provides motivational speakers to ESL students at 9 local middle schools, where approximately 700 students participate and 72 students receive incentive awards for their achievements and improvements. The Scholarship Program awards $2,000, 3,000, 4,000 & 5,000 annual scholarships to outstanding Hispanic students who are current or former Forsyth County English Language Learner (ELL) and/or Limited English Proficient (LEP) students. This program culminates at the annual Spanish Nite Gala, where the community recognizes the recipients. Since 2000, the Hispanic League has awarded more than 369 scholarships worth $820,000, with 41 scholarships presented in 2017. Culture The Hispanic League promotes multicultural understanding each fall at Fiesta and 2018 will be the 26th Annual Fiesta, it is a Winston-Salem community tradition. With an average attendance of over 20,000 people celebrating diversity, Hispanic heritage, and cross-cultural understanding, it is the largest one-day Hispanic street festival in the Triad. In 2018, it will be September 22nd. Other events include the International Wine Tasting, Zumbathon, Colorful Sounds in Concert and others. Community The Hispanic League partners with more than 10 community organizations to provide educational programming and assistance to the Hispanic community. A sample includes WS/FC Library, International Center of Forsyth Tech, YMCA Camp High Hopes, YMCA Hispanic Achievers, Christmas Giving, BOOKMARKS, WS/FC School System, Community Care Center and others to provide services free of charge. The Hispanic League has a Community Service Coordinator & FaithHealth Connector who provides resources to the community for Spanish speaking individuals. Part of this service includes quarterly FaithAction ID Drives for the community in which any individual may receive photo identification. The FaithAction IDs are recognized by local law enforcement, health care facilities and other partner organizations/businesses. The Hispanic League welcomes your tax-deductible contribution -- as a member or a friend -- to continue support of diverse projects and programs on behalf of the entire community.
