Answer: Healthy NewsWorks provides principals and teachers with a proven literacy program through which students in elementary and middle schools learn essential life skills, develop confidence, and increase their health knowledge. We align our lesson plans with national Common Core Education Standards and National Health Education Standards, making our program complementary to what every student is expected to learn at each grade level. Our school-based programs represent a three-way collaboration among classroom teachers, students, and community professionals that helps children develop their powers of inquiry and communication. Over the years, Healthy NewsWorks has partnered with classroom teachers in more than 40 schools to guide their students to produce hundreds of newspapers, 11 books, and, in 2023, our first magazine. We also continue to expand into digital media so our young reporters gain experience creating videos and films. Our staff includes four veteran teachers who have spent years in the classroom and as literacy coaches. Student reporters learn through the program to ask questions, identify factual information, write accurately, and share what they learn. Their work is published in health-focused newspapers, books, and digital media that are distributed to their fellow students and in the broader community. They are empowered as health messengers, educators, and role models.
