Answer: The Hawaii Institute for Human Rights (HIHR) is a simple and sincere effort to mobilize our citizens of Hawai'i and the world to express their basic rights and explore the possibilities for compassion and peace in our islands and world. HIHR is dedicated to promoting human rights principles and to creating a culture of peace through education and advocacy. HIHR fosters international public law instruments by implementing civil, political, economic, social, cultural, collective and ecological rights. HIHR strives for social justice in the development of a sustainable society in Hawai'i. Through peace education build understanding and empathy to embrace the Principle that all people are able to live in equality and have human dignity. Our common vision for human rights requires compassionate commitment to direct action -- that means everything from simplifying articles in international instruments to codifying new conventions expanding international human rights law. Our strength is the commitment to grassroots organizing to realize the inherent possibilities for peace on the planet. HIHR defends principles and people of peace, ecology and human rights not relying on violence as an instrument of policy. We oppose oppression and genocide by encouraging research and policy studies on nonviolent civil disobedience and sharing the results through publications, presentations and media outreach. HIHR provides strategic, tactical and training assistance to nonviolent movements by developing appropriate educational training and strategic programs for nonviolent social change. HIHR organizes conferences on nonviolent struggles and peacemaking by assembling peace and justice teams of trainers. We support these conferences by publishing articles, pamphlets, and books and creating teaching tools that promote traditional human rights and that expand principles of fundamental freedoms.
