Answer: Hartfield & Company CPAs, PC was started by Stephen Hartfield as a traditional CPA firm offering tax planning/compliance and financial statement preparation. That all changed in late 1999 when one of our long-term clients (10+ years) had a medical scare and needed someone to help run his business, a metals dealer, value-added processor and distributor, Specialty Metals, Inc.. Stephen jumped at the chance to learn how business was done from the inside out. He became the company's general manager and CFO. During his five-year tenure - my client decided to sell the business - Stephen learned about ordering copper and aluminum in the spot and futures markets, job costing, employee management with all of the related HR issues. In essence, he learned things that they just don't teach in accounting school. Following Specialty Metals, he spent the next five years in two other finance related roles. With all of this hands-on experience the logical next step was to become a part-time or fractional CFO while also expanding his CPA practice. Today, the company is made up of Stephen Hartfield along with Sabrina Mand who has been with the company for four years starting while in her last year of college. Sabrina handles the accounting for our CPA clients and does a lot of the day-to-day work with our fractional CFO clients. She is also a CPA candidate and will be sitting for the CPA exam in the near future. Poonam Shah is our newest hire. She too has about four years of experience and she supports Sabrina with her workload.
