Answer: Its no secret to those who focus on womens healthcare that the United States is experiencing a shortage of maternity and womens health care providers. At this critical moment in history, the medical community is tasked with providing high quality care without adequate resources. Its clear that this shortage is part of why the US ranks near the bottom among developed countries in terms of maternal health outcomes. Midwives are an underutilized resource in the United States and we believe this underutilization is due to a lack of understanding surrounding this role in the modern healthcare system. By better incorporating Midwives into collaborative care teams, we can help alleviate this shortage and improve healthcare outcomes. The American College of Nurse-Midwives as well as the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists have both outlined how to incorporate midwives into a team-based, collaborative care model, but very few people know how to make this a reality. The goal of Grow Midwives is to educate physicians, hospitals, and midwives about best practice in collaborative experiences, so that a variety of care models, in a variety of settings, can be easily adopted by both established hospitals and independent healthcare providers. We want to create, build, enhance, and advance existing structures no matter if they are Physician, Midwife, or Hospital owned, in a urban or rural hospital, or stand alone birth center.
