Answer: Great Camp Sagamore is a National Historic Landmark in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains. Sagamore, designed and built by William West Durant in 1897, is considered the model for the rustic architecture style that was later used throughout the Adirondacks and in the developing National Parks of the early 20th century. Owned as a wilderness retreat by the family of Alfred Vanderbilt I from 1901-1954, Sagamore was visited by celebrated artists, musicians, actors and dignitaries. Today, Great Camp Sagamore is a non-profit educational institution where you can stay and experience the Adirondacks in a historic setting including touring the complex, taking classes in history, art and nature or simply relaxing in the solitude.
