Answer: Girls Rock! Rhode Island is a volunteer-based non-profit that uses music creation and critical thinking to foster empowerment, collaborative relationships, and the development of healthy identities in girls, women, trans, and gender non-conforming individuals. We fulfill our mission by providing music and gender educational camps and year-round programming, including: Girls Rock Camp, for youth 11-18 and Ladies Rock Camp, for adults 18 and over, Group Music Lessons, Youth Drop-In, Band Booster, Gender Discussion Group, Article Club, and Gear Loan. All of our programs draw from the Girls Rock Camp model where participants learn an instrument, join a band, write a song, and perform it live, all in just five days. All skill levels are welcome and two-thirds of participants receive full or partial scholarships to attend. Participants will have the opportunity to meet other campers and professional musicians, as well as learn about helpful gender- and music-centered topics like concert promotion, screen-printing and band merchandise creation, the history of women who rock, media literacy, self-esteem-building, and assertiveness.
