Answer: Future Minority Doctor was founded in 2020 and launched in response to the global pandemic that exposed racial disparities in healthcare. We believe that diversification of the healthcare workforce can go a long way toward achieving greater health equity for communities of color. Despite efforts by many programs and institutions to increase diversity within medicine, the percentage of medical school matriculants from underrepresented minority groups has remained relatively stagnant over the past 40 years. Factors contributing to this lack of progress include the relative lack of academic enrichment, financial resources, advising, and mentorship that students from underrepresented minority groups face compared to their white counterparts. Our mission is to create a workforce that is an accurate reflection of the countrys demographics, thereby promoting health equity. We recognize that being an underrepresented minority, first-generation college student, or otherwise minoritized student on the path to medical school can come with unique challenges, so we equip students with the knowledge and skills to succeed in their academic and extracurricular pursuits. Our projects include a podcast that provides tips for academic success as well as advice on how to overcome psychological challenges. It also highlights the stories of minority physicians from a variety of specialties, in order to help students see their faces and experiences reflected in the medical profession. We are also currently piloting a coaching and mentoring program which focuses on coaching underrepresented minority students from low socioeconomic backgrounds through the year-long process of applying to and gaining admission into medical school.
