Answer: Families Helping Families of Iowa (FHF) is here to offer success and opportunities to children who have been abused or neglected and assist the families that care for them. FHF is a non-profit organization located in Cedar Rapids that's designed to help children in who have been removed from their home due to abuse or neglect. These children want to contribute equally with their peers to society; FHF has the potential to help them! Children aging out of foster care are the most neglected children within the foster care system because they often lack the support and resources that young adults need to live independently. Of the approximately 900 children in foster care in the Cedar Rapids area, roughly 40% are teens. Every year, at least 25 of these teens turn 18 and graduate from high school. The projected cost to our communitys taxpayers, of doing nothing, on average, for every young person who ages out of foster care is $300,000 in social costs over that persons lifetime. Social costs are taxpayer costs such as public assistance and incarceration, as well as costs absorbed by the community. FHF helps these children by providing funding to help them be successful as they become productive adults.
