Answer: Eves Fund for Native American Health Initiatives promotes hope, wellness and injury prevention for Native American youth, primarily those living on or near the Navajo Nation in Arizona, New Mexico, & Utah. Our largest program, ThinkFirst Navajo, provides injury prevention education for grades K-12. During the in-school presentations, students hear from adult Navajos who live with paraplegia as a result of a preventable injury. An integral part of our injury prevention education is teaching kids about the importance of wearing safety helmets. Whether riding bikes, off road vehicles, horses, or skate boards we urge kids to wear a properly fitted helmet on their heads. For the past two years, we distributed 200 helmets at the Shiprock Marathon to children who completed the Kids Run. At every presentation, we demonstrate the importance of helmet safety and distribute a helmet to the student volunteer. Since its creation in 2005, our ThinkFirst Navajo program has taught more than 35,000 young people about injury prevention. We have been able to expand this program considerably, thanks to grants received from the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation, New Mexico Governor's Commission on Disability, & Con Alma Health Foundation. Eve's Fund leaders Bob Crowell & Barbara Crowell Roy were named Purpose Prize Fellows in 2013 for their work in injury prevention on the Navajo Nation. Eve's Fund also works to improve literacy among elementary students through our Magic Tree House Teaching Bookshelf program. For older students, we offer scholarships that cover expenses at either a college-preparatory high school or vocational/technical program. Eve's Fund was established in 2005 by Dr. Robert M. Crowell, a retired neurosurgeon, and named in memory of his daughter, Eve Erin Crowell. The organization is a non-profit 501 (c)(3) incorporated in New Mexico. All donations are tax deductible. Barbara Crowell Roy, Eve's mother, oversees all programs and daily operations.
