Answer: Enduring Hearts funds the most promising research being conducted to increase the longevity of pediatric heart transplants, improve the quality of life for transplant recipients, and ultimately solve the congenital heart defect epidemic, affecting up to 10 out of every 1000 live births, and upwards of 35,000 cases each year. Some of these patients ultimately require a heart transplant as well. As a nonprofit organization, we work with our Scientific Advisory Committee to identify and award operating grants for research projects in organ transplantation and congenital heart disease to members of academic staff at universities, transplant centers and research institutes. We give priority to clinical research projects and new emerging technologies focused on understanding the cause, development and prevention of human transplantation diseases, including organ injury and rejection, viral infection and late graft deterioration. We intend to encourage, not stifle, discovery and innovation by rewarding cutting edge thinking and aggressive studies designed to move the needle rapidly! We hope to see a day when a child born with congenital or acquired end-stage heart failure can avoid a heart transplant in order to survive - or if one is required, the ability to live with the same donated organ for a lifetime.
