Answer: Founded in 2019, eightysix is dedicated to replacing single-use plastic with sustainable, rapidly renewable, biodegradable, and compostable solutions; starting with drinking straws. Made from an indigenous hedge grass that already grows in a hollow, straw-like shape, eightysix straws get stronger in liquid, and are the simplest, most natural, convenient, and ideal alternative to paper and traditional plastic straws. The company name, eightysix, comes from the slang term, eighty-six, commonly used in the American food service industry as a transitive verb in the following ways: 1. To describe an item that is no longer available on the menu; 2. To eject or bar from a restaurant, bar, or club, etc.; and 3. To reject, discard, ban, or cancel. The company uses this term to promote the ban and rejection of single-use plastic, and aims to make it simple and fun to be more environmentally responsible in an industry which is traditionally wasteful, by providing high-quality and eco-friendly solutions to reduce single-use plastic and other comparable alternatives made by resource-heavy processes. Partnered with Lonely Whale, eightysix works to keep plastic straws out of the ocean and donates a portion of every sale to Lonely Whale to help support global ocean cleanup and innovative ideas to positively impact environmental health.
