Answer: There are few skills that will affect a child’s success in school or in life as the ability to read. Yet as many as one in five students has dyslexia, an inherited, neurological disorder that makes reading and writing difficult to master despite adequate intelligence, adequate instruction, and adequate motivation. Dyslexia is by far the most common learning disability. Dyslexia Reading Connection, Inc. (DRC) has been aiding students and adults with dyslexia since 2006. Realizing our mission of “Inspiring a world of learning and literacy for the dyslexic community of Northeast Wisconsin,” DRC has grown to be one of the largest organization dealing specifically with dyslexia in Wisconsin. Since our inception, we have helped hundreds of students. We provide one-on-one tutoring to these students using the Barton Reading and Spelling System, an Orton-Gillingham based program. Research sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has shown this to be effective in teaching dyslexic students who have difficulty learning with traditional classroom methods. It has the essential components required by the No Child Left Behind Act and meets the NIH description of best practices for students with dyslexia. Students who complete our program are fully capable of reading at a high school and even a college level. We also offer math tutoring services for struggling math students, and individuals with dyslexia or dyscalculia. The multi-sensory program we use teaches math using manipulatives for students to understand value, operation, computation, and application.
