Answer: The Dickerson Park Zoo was established in 1922 and is home to more than 500 animals that represent 160 different species. The DPZ has been an accredited member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) since 1986. Our Mission: Dickerson Park Zoo connects people with animals to create adventures that encourage discovery and inspire conservation action. DPZ has four objectives: education, recreation, conservation and and research. Education: Our Education Department on zoo grounds offers year-round classes to children ages 2 - 15. These classes broaden the realization of animals through the use of live animal encounters and age-appropriate lessons. The Education Department also participates in an outreach program by traveling to local schools, retirement homes, and daycare centers. Recreation Conservation: DPZ has been actively involved in several Species Survival Plans. We have found success with the Asian elephants, maned wolves and cheetahs.
