Answer: One of the oldest and largest science fairs in the United States, Delaware Valley Science Fairs, Inc. (DVSF) was founded in 1949 and incorporated as a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization in 1993. DVSF is designed as a vehicle for stimulating interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) among middle-school and high-school students in eastern Pennsylvania, Delaware, and southern New Jersey. DVSF is an Affiliated Fair for the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF). The mission of Delaware Valley Science Fairs (DVSF) is to bring parents, teachers, and industry together to stimulate and nurture young people so that they grow and develop into contributing members of the community. The science fair venue is a forum for students to present their scientific work and interact with scientists in their field to receive feedback on their efforts. DVSF presents close to $3,000,000 in awards and scholarships and takes the top winning students to the Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) each year. The opportunity for the students to compete, make new friends, and to see what other young scientists and engineers are doing in their respective fields gives them an indelible experience. To build essential skills for future innovation, DVSF provides student mentoring opportunities and teacher workshops. In addition, teachers are selected each year to accompany the student medal winners to ISEF. Symposia, tours, and interactions with other educators enhance the teachers ability to guide their students in investigative research projects. DVSF is not supported by public funds. The program relies entirely on the contributions of corporations, foundations, and individuals who want to encourage our future generation of scientists and engineers. Unlike many nonprofit organizations, contributions go directly to the program and not to salaries or overhead. Contributions can be made through the United Way or Friends of DVSF.
