Answer: Costs of Care, Inc. is an independent grant-supported 501c3 nonprofit that uses advocacy, education, and technology to help patients and their caregivers deflate medical bills. To date Costs of Care has crowd-sourced more than 300 stories from patients, nurses, and physicians all over the United States that illustrate routine opportunities to improve the value of care. These stories have been used by stakeholders such as the Institute of Medicine and Massachusetts Joint Commission on Public Health. They have been featured in the New York Times, National Public Radio, ABC Television, and the New England Journal of Medicine. Most recently, the stories have been used to educate clinicians through the development of the Teaching Value Project, as initiative of Costs of Care supported by the ABIM Foundation that uses web-based video vignettes to illustrate principles of high value care. They will also be featured in a forthcoming textbook from McGraw-Hill on value-based care.
