Answer: The Corporation of Guardianship (CoG) is a private, non-profit organization located in Greensboro, NC. CoG began operations in 1979 in response to the growing need for person-centered assistance, intervention and advocacy for older adults and persons with disabilities. Many of our clients are among the most vulnerable members of our community those who are incapacitated and with no family or friends who can adequately meet their needs. We serve people with dementia, adults with developmental disabilities, people who have suffered severe brain trauma, and adults who are incapacitated by mental illness. We serve our clients in the roles of Guardian (Full Guardian, Guardian of the Person, Guardian of the Estate), Agent under a Power of Attorney (Financial and Healthcare), Trustee of Special Needs Trusts, and Representative Payee. Beyond fulfilling the legal requirements of our services, we believe in striving to grant the greatest quality of life possible to our clients, and as much autonomy and freedom as possible under the law. We utilize a person-centered approach, which means prioritizing what the client wants and what will benefit our client most. Traditional models of supported decision-making often focus on the types of services a client needs to address the individuals deficits and negative behavior. In contrast, the person-centered approach focuses on the positive aspects of a persons life and involves: Listening: The individuals choices and description of a good life are respected. Community: Relationships with family, friends and people in the community are at the center of planning. Self-Direction: The individuals choice and control are supported. Talents and Contributions: The experience, talents and contributions of individuals are strengthened and supported. Responsibility: There is shared responsibility for supports and choices.
