Answer: Sparta became incorporated in 1852 and is the county seat of Monroe County, nestled in the beautiful rolling hills of western Wisconsin along the La Crosse River. The population was 9,522 at the 2010 census. The city was named after ancient Greek city-state of Sparta. Sparta is the home and international headquarters of several businesses including Century Foods International, Northern Engraving Corporation, Spartek, Mathews Incorporation, F.A.S.T. Corporation, Sparta Brush Company, McPherson Guitars, Multistack, Lake States Lumber, and Wesco Home Furnishings. Once known for the healing powers of the local artesian springs, Sparta is now most recognized as the junction of the Elroy-Sparta and La Crosse River bike trails. Sparta's claim as the "Bicycling Capital of America" is based upon the first rail bed in Wisconsin to be converted to bike trails between Sparta and Elroy. Annual Events: Butterfest is an annual event in the city. Incorporated on February 14, 1984, it was formed to raise funds and conduct fund raising projects for the advancement of the general welfare of the city of Sparta.
