Answer: We all want to help people in our own backyard. The Caring Community Foundation provides the platform to provide financial assistance for expenses like rent, utilities and other bills, so that cancer patients and their families can focus on getting better, because the power of a community can make a difference. How it all began... In May 1999 Jill Wolford, a young Cary mother of two was diagnosed with breast cancer. The subsequent nine months were filled with chemotherapy, radiation, hospitalizations, and many experiences that challenged her and her family. Throughout that time, friends, neighbors, family, coworkers, and even strangers helped them through this very difficult period. Inspired by the support they received, she and her husband Eric decided that the best way to show appreciation for those who had helped them would be to help other individuals challenged with cancer in other words, pay it forward. How It Works... Our goal at CCF is to make the gift of giving a seamless, effective process. We rely on the social workers at Triangle area hospitals to identify patient needs and to apply for assistance on their behalf. Respect for our patients and their confidentiality is a top priority. Because we are able to rely on the vetting process done at the hospital level, we can eliminate the red tape and make a decision within 48 hours, often sooner. And we are able to provide assistance within 48 hours of granting the requests. Most checks are written directly to vendors, with a few exceptions made in unique situations. Patients must be North Carolina residents and are eligible to receive assistance only once, even if they are receiving treatment at a different facility than before. We understand the impact of a health crisis. Our mission is to help ease the burden of everyday concerns that weigh so heavily during cancer treatment. The help we are able to provide is only possible because of the generosity of sponsors and donors some affected by cancer themselves and some who simply understand the power of making a difference in the lives of others.
