Answer: Brunswick Town/Fort Anderson State Historic Site is a 120 acre site on the Cape Fear River between Wilmington and Southport, NC. Brunswick was established as a world-class port in 1726. It was the home of two Royal Governors: Arthur Dobbs and William Tryon; and was the site of one of the first successful armed rebellions against British authority in America during the Stamp Act Crisis in February 1766. The town was abandoned in February 1776 and the port abandoned after 1826. It was a major port of entry for Scottish Highlanders and a port of debarkation for African slaves. It was also the location of the furthest south rice fields on the Cape Fear. Fort Anderson was constructed on part of the ruins of Brunswick, starting in March 1862. Aside from serving as one of the link last of the chain of forts constructed on the River to defend Wilmington, its primary purpose was to serve as the main quarantine station for blockade runners operating in the Cape Fear. It would fall to a combined Union land and naval assault on February 19, 1865. After the fall of Wilmington the fort served as the largest refugee camp for the Freedmens Bureau in the lower Cape Fear. It was in operation until at least mid-1867. The site is one of the fertile archaeological sites in North Carolina and house exhibits and artifacts in the museum. The most prominent ruins are St. Philips Anglican Church and Russellborough-the former home of the Royal governors and burned by British troops in March 1776.
