Answer: Opened in 1999 in Key West famous for its Key Lime Pies, it suddenly dawned on Tania to use her Brazilian grandmothers recipe for Key Lime Pies and started selling at their restaurant. At that time, they had a neighbor, a true Conch (Key West native) for generations, that would come everyday to buy their Key Lime Pies and convinced Tania and Roberto that if there would ever be a contest, they should enter because they would win. Months later, Roberto was reading the local newspaper and noticed that a Key Lime Pie contest was being held that day. They entered the contest at the last minute and won, 1st Place for Best Key Lime Pie in Key West, FL amongst 17 other contestants! There has been no contest since 1999. The next day, everyone came to the restaurant looking for Key Lime Pies and thats when they changed their restaurant concept to become Blond Giraffe Key Lime Pie Factory. Blond Giraffes Key Lime Pies are made with sweetened condensed milk made from scratch, with a light meringue on top. This award-winning Key Lime Pie has also been voted The Best of Florida for eight consecutive years. Blond Giraffe has been featured in 5 different Food Network programs, Food Wars -Travel Channel, magazines like National Geographic Traveler, Islands, Florida Traveler, Simply the Best, Southern Living and Coastal Living as well the Associated Press. Currently operating from its newest state of the art location in Tavernier, FL, Blond Giraffe produces a wide array of Key Lime products in addition to its famous Key Lime Pie, including; fresh baked cookies, candies and the Pie on a stick, a frozen slice of Key Lime Pie on a stick dipped in bittersweet Swiss chocolate. Blond Giraffe serves organic argentinian empanadas and old fashioned banana splits, milkshakes and ice cream. Today, Tania and Roberto have only one location in Tavernier, FL and an online store and future plans to open more locations under trademark licensing.
